Ruston prepares for big Veteran's Day celebration

RUSTON, La. - The City of Ruston is getting ready to take a ceremony to new heights.

"Honoring our veterans is the main thing and that's what we need to do and we've gotten away from it and that's a shame," Lincoln Parish Sheriff's Deputy, Judy Burt.

It started with a small idea that kept growing.

"We wanted to do something big and we wanted to do something that would mean a lot to a lot of people," Burt said.

Now they're hoping it's big enough to bring out the whole city and many more to honor our country's finest.

"This community stands behind the military 110% it's great that they back the community in everything that we've done," Louisiana Army National Guard Battalion Commander, Stewart Adams, said.

"Not being from Ruston actually being rom New York I haven't had the opportunity to participate in a Veteran's Day parade so this is something that's actually something I've actually wanted to do for a long time," Sgt. First Class Nipa Thomas said.

"I have a lot of respect for those that have served our country and actually saw battle," retired Army veteran Bill Elmore said.

It will be a very special occasion for, Priscilla Soignier, the mother of a hometown hero.

"He was very proud to be a soldier it was one of the best parts of him," she said.

Her son, Shane Soignier, was suffering from PTSD after serving in Iraq and took his own life in 2015.

He was 31 years-old.

"It's been an adjustment  I've only been a Gold Star Mother for a couple of years," she said.

She knows this veteran's day parade would be right up her son's alley.

"He would be very happy and he would be right in the middle of all of this."

She hopes this event sends a message that can be heard to the many men and women that are still fighting for freedom.

"We love them and that we're here  and we'll never let the fact that they've served and protected us be forgotten."

The parade starts at 10a.m. and the ceremony begins at 11 a.m. Friday November 10, 2017 at Railroad Park
