Ouachita school board OKs budget with $1.5M operational deficit

OUACHITA Parish - According to our partners at The News-Star, the Ouachita Parish School Board approved its budget for the 2017-18 fiscal year on Tuesday.

The beginning fund balance for the general, special revenue and debt service funds is $81,765,492. The estimated end balance is $80,276,820.

Juanita Duke, director of business for the Ouachita Parish School Board, said the $1,488,627 operational deficit can be attributed to several factors.

The district expects approximately 50 fewer students to be enrolled at the Oct. 1 count for state Minimum Foundation Program funds than were enrolled at the Feb. 1 MFP count.

MFP funding is projected to be $910,119 lower than last year because of student changes and because the board's wealth factor in the MFP determination increased.

The legislature also discontinued supplemental funding that was used for pay supplements for some employees. The district received $678,640 in the last fiscal year.
