ANGOLA, La. - (5/3/18) Correctional officers at Louisiana State Penitentiary thwarted an escape attempt Wednesday by an offender working in the field.
At approximately 2:15 p.m. on May 2, 2018, offender Kristopher Schoeing was observed running from a farm line. Schoeing disobeyed a correctional officer’s verbal command to stop, and the officer fired a warning shot.
Schoeing continued to run, at which time the officer fired another shot. Responding officers tackled Schoeing and restrained him.
At no time was the offender close to escaping from the prison, and he was not hit by either gunshot.
Angola's EMT staff transported Schoeing to the prison’s treatment center for evaluation by medical and mental health staff.
Schoeing is serving a life sentence out of Calcasieu Parish for aggravated rape. He has been locked up at Louisiana State Penitentiary since April 3, 2000.
An investigation is underway into this incident.
