UPDATE: District Attorney to review officer-involved shooting investigation

WEST MONROE, La. - UPDATE (12/6/2017): The District Attorney will now decide whether two West Monroe Police Officers acted properly, or will face charges, in a recent officer-involved shooting.

The incident happened two and a half weeks ago on Friday, November 17, 2017.

Shady Bell Junior, 46, died when he and officers confronted one another on Basic Drive, near the Aaron's Rent-to-Own. 

Police say Bell raised his weapon and fired on the officers who then returned fire.

The Ouachita Parish Sheriff's Office turned over its investigation to the District Attorney on Tuesday, December 5th.

Neither deputies, nor West Monroe Police have named the officers involved.


(11/18/2017 2:20 PM) The suspect involved in the officer-involved shooting has been identified.

West Monroe Police Officers responded to a report of a disturbance that identified a suspect and vehicle he was in near businesses on Basic Dr. in West Monroe Friday evening, Nov. 17th.

Upon arriving at the location, officers encountered an armed suspect, Shady Bell, Jr., Black male, age 46 of Monroe, who then fired his weapon at the officers. Officers returned fire, fatally wounding the suspect.

The Ouachita Parish Sheriff’s Office is currently investigating the incident.

Autopsy results are pending.

The identities of the officers involved are not being released at this time.


(11/18/2017) On Saturday morning, Ouachita Parish Sheriff's Office Public Information Officer Deputy Glenn Springfield confirmed the OPSO is investigating the West Monroe Police Department officer involved shooting that occurred early Friday evening.  The officer was not injured, the victim is deceased.  The identities of both are not being released at this time. In the press release sent to the media, Deputy Springfield also stated no further details are being released as it is an open investigation, and he does not anticipate any further information being release from police today. 


(11/17/2017)  Around 6:15 p.m. Friday night, a shooting involved West Monroe Police happened near the Aaron's store on Basic Drive, right off of Thomas Road. WMPD says several of their officers are involved. We do not know why they were called to the area, or what sparked the shooting. John Lick, the manager of the Aaron's store,  tells our partners at the Newsstar says he heard about 15-20 shots outside of the building. Witnesses say one person is dead. Police will not confirm the death at this time. 

At this time, the Ouachita Parish Sheriff's Office has taken over the investigation. The OPSO tells NBC 10 they are not actively searching for any suspects at this time. They also said they do not anticipate releasing any more information tonight.

Our Renee Beninate arrived on the scene shortly after the shooting happened. She could see a large amount of police cars, and multiple departments on the scene including WMPD, OPSO, and the Louisiana State Police. 

Basic Drive was shutdown shortly after the shooting, and is expected to be closed throughout much of the night.

NBC 10 has received reports of an officer involved shooting off of Thomas road in West Monroe.

The incident is going on near the Texas Roadhouse, Waffle House area.
