More than 500 customers file suit against Greater Ouachita Water Company

West Monroe, La.-- - Greater Ouachita Water Company customer Quentin Henry said he's had issues with the business for years.

Now he's reached his boiling point.

"I was fed up with it," Henry said. "The poor quality of the water and mainly it was the poor customer service. It was like every time you call up there it's like you're gonna pay this much money, there's nothing you can do about it and that's it. They just have a monopoly on the system and they were abusing their power with it."

Yet, he's not alone.

He and more than 500 people have filed suit against the company. Monroe attorney Anthony Bruscato is representing the group.

"Once I started it... people started seeing it and it went from there," Henry added.

The response came after customers received unexpectedly high water bills. This happened after the company failed to properly read water meters for a few months.

The company worked to address the problem by holding town hall meetings and giving credits for overcharged bills.

Some customers, like Henry, claim the problems continued.

"Everybody here has the same problems, the same complaints. I've never heard anybody have a different opinion about the company. Nobody's just done anything about it until I decided to," he said.

The plaintiffs are asking to be refunded for these overcharged bills as well as the money for the 'inconvenience and mental distress' they experienced.

"They're not holding up their end of the deal according to the State Water Act," Henry added.

GOWC fired back and said the matter shouldn't be handled in local courts.

They believe it should instead be handled by the Public Service Commission.

We reached out to lawyers from Greater Ouachita and Severn Trent for comment, but haven't heard back yet.
