Monroe father arrested after death of 3-month-old boy

MONROE, La. - An investigation into an infant child's death gets deep.

"It's just a tragic situation with an infant and it's senseless basically," Ouahcita Parish District Attorney Steve Tew said.

Monroe Police and the District Attorney's office have been connecting the dots for a little over two months. Tew remembers the beginning.

"MPD received a complaint, they investigated it referred it to our office and we put it before the grand jury," Tew said.

The evidence led to an arrest that was close to home.

"An indictment for 2nd degree murder against Davontae Harris," he said.

The victim was three-month old D'Quavez Harris and just a couple of months after the investigation started Monroe Police arrested his fatherk, Davontae for murder.

Nicholas Thomas, his next door neighbor, was in disbelief when he heard the news.

"I live like right next door to him," Thomas said.

"He wouldn't do nothing like that."

Thomas says Harris was not the violent type.

"If anything it really did happen like that it probably was an accident."

Harris told investigators he dropped his baby on accident.

"Accidents do happen,"  They happen all the time. People drop babies. It's mistakes.

However prosecutors believe evidence will prove otherwise.

For those still trying to understand what happened, they say either way it doesn't bring his baby boy, D'Quavez, back.

"He lost a child, there's nothing that can help that pain," Thomas said.

Harris is being held in the Ouachita Correctional Center without bond pending his next hearing.

District Attorney Steve Tew says the details of this case will be released as they become available in the coming weeks.
