Monroe apartment residents wake up to morning fire

MONROE, La. - A Friday morning in the Morrison Place Apartments goes up in smoke.

"We were just like cooking breakfast this morning I looked out on the porch we're in the building next door," Austin Ross said.

"I mean everybody was running outside there were flames coming out of the building."

"My wife and I were in there and about 10 p.m.  somebody knocked on the door on the door and it wasn't just a regular knock," resident," Bill Harvey said.

That's because this knock was about an emergency.

"We came down the stairs and a guy told us to get your dogs and get out," Harvey said.

"I said what's wrong he said a fire so when i got out i looked over to the left and it was about 20 foot flame."

Once Harvey and his wife were out of harms way he turned his attention to his neighbors.

One apartment that burned completely and the woman, who lived inside, barely escaped.

The girl I know her real good the one that received most of the damage.

Witnesses say their neighbor was lucky to make it out safe and sound because she was in the shower when she smelled the smoke.

"She got out and thank god she did at the time because it could've been that a lot worse," Ross said.

"She was crying and upset and first thing I did was went over and hugged her," Harvey said.

A community that says they stick together in tough times like these.

Now they focus on protecting what's left from would be looters.

"It's sad that we have to think about that but there are people out there that will try to take advantage of a situation," Ross said.

Whatever comes their way they plan to face it together.

Residents thanked the Monroe  Fire department but are also grateful to the maintenance crew for getting everyone out safe just before first responders arrived.

Also the Morrison Place property owner has moved the residents into temporary apartments while repairs are being made.
