MONROE, La. - When members of the Region 8 Search Team based in Monroe learned that Florida needed help in the midst of Hurricane Irma, they jumped to lend a helping hand.
Greg Hill, the leader of the Region 8 Response Team said "we are deploying to Tallahassee, Florida to meet up with other teams from the state of Louisiana to aid Florida with Hurricane Irma."
Nine men from Monroe, West Monroe, Ouachita Parish, and Ruston left bright and early Sunday morning. They drove 8 hours to the Sunshine State for their 14 day deployment.
"It's a good feeling knowing that all four departments can come together as one team and go off and work side by side. It's also great for the community" said Greg Hill.
Task Force leader Hill said the team will primarily be conducting water rescues and offering medical help wherever they are sent.
He added, "we'll basically be picking people off cars houses. It's gonna be taxing for us to get there and all, but I think we're all excited once again to go back, you know, and get our feet wet for the lack of a better term. You know, to basically be part of something like that."
The team headed out not knowing what to expect, but ready to do whatever it takes to help out their fellow citizens. Hill said "there's no telling what kind of destruction, what kind of high winds, what kind of water surge, stuff like that, they're gonna get into down there."
