MONROE, La. - Monroe is renaming one of its elementary schools after one of its top educators.
Lincoln Elementary School will become Roy Neal Shelling Elementary.
Shelling served in the Monroe school district for nearly half a century .
He died after battling a lengthy illness.
Roy's widow, Brenda Shelling, and family were in attendance Tuesday as the board approved the re-naming.
Brenda thanked officials and stated "this honor and it's truly truly an honor to have a school named after him."
Shelling most recently was principal of Lincoln Elementary and he also worked as a teacher and coach.
