Police: Suspicious item was not a bomb

MONROE, La. - UPDATE (3:39 p.m.): Monroe Police have released details in Thursday morning's bomb threat that evacuated employees.

On June 22, 2017 at 9:00 AM Monroe police dispatch received a phone call from what appeared to be a male voice stating that there was a bomb at the Regions Bank main office in Monroe.

The main office is located at 1500 N18th St. Officers were dispatched to the main office on North 18th, but were also sent to a secondary location of a Regions branch at 601 Sterlington Road to make sure this location was secure.

The Regions branch on Sterlington Road was evaluated and it did appear to be secure.

Officers at the N18th Street main office did locate what appeared to be a suspicious item located inside of a trash can sitting right outside of the front entrance to the bank.

It was at this time that the Monroe police Explosive Ordinance Disposal (EOD) team was activated.

Police officers who were already on scene immediately began to evacuate several places of business located in and around the 1800 block of Tower Drive.

Once the employees were all safely evacuated police began to set up a perimeter surrounding the bank area to secure the safety of all citizens and personnel.

Shortly thereafter the Monroe police EOD bomb technicians arrived and took over the scene.

Proper protocol was set in place as with any bomb threat and the team executed their plan of action flawlessly.

The suspicious item was secured and then disrupted; it was found not to be of any threat.

The building and the surrounding areas were then swept by the bomb technicians for any other items that would cause any concerns for safety.

The building was found to be clean and at 12:25 PM N18th Street all places of business, and the Regions bank main office were reopened.


All employees and personnel were allowed back into the buildings to resume the normal workday.


UPDATE (12:30 P.M.): Monroe Police have said the bomb threat situation is now under control and the bank has re-opened.

All streets that were previously closed have been reopened as well.

Monroe Police are investigating a bomb threat at a Monroe bank.

According to officials the threat happened around 9:30 a.m. Thursday morning (6/22/17) at Regions Bank on Tower Drive in Monroe.

The area has been secured and employees have been evacuated.

The bomb squad is on scene and are sweeping the building.

Tower Drive is blocked off.

Officials are currently shutting down the other side of the roads and North 18th Street.

KTVE/KARD has a crew headed to the scene.
