Judge orders parents of rodent-bitten baby to psychiatric facility

MAGNOLIA, Ar. (KARK) - The parents of a newborn who were arrested last month when their child had to be taken to the hospital for rodent bites have been ordered to a psychiatric facility.

That was the decision on Thursday morning of a Columbia County Circuit Court judge in the case of Erica
Shryock, 19, and Charles Elliott, 18. The pair appeared in a courtroom at the Columbia County Jail.

The teens were charged in mid-May with Endangering the Welfare of a Minor after doctors told officials that their 15-day-old daughter suffered about 100 bites.

Police said the baby's arms, fingers, hands and face were covered in rodent bites and described a one-inch wide wound on the baby's forehead where her skull was visible, which they said required facial reconstruction surgery.

In today's appearance, the judge lifted part of their bond that kept Shryock and Elliott from being around children under 12 because there would be children in any treatment facility. An attorney says the two would more than likely not be placed in the same facility.

Shryock and Elliott were told they will not be allowed to leave the facility and if they do, their bond would be
revoked and they would be returned to jail.

The baby remains in state custody.

A review hearing for the couple is scheduled for July 6.

When he was arrested, Elliott told officials he knew about the rodent problem in the home they shared with a roommate, but did nothing about it.

The City of Magnolia says the home faces condemnation if the owner doesn't take action to get the dwelling up to code.
