TENSAS PARISH - (2/18/18) St. Joseph – Two unrestrained occupants lost their lives yesterday after the vehicle they were in traveled off the road and struck a ditch embankment.
Shortly after 6:40 p.m., on Saturday February 17, 2018, Louisiana State Police Troop F responded to a single-vehicle crash on LA Hwy 128 near St. Joseph. The preliminary investigation revealed a 2004 Mazda Tribute, driven by 60-year-old Charles Barnes of St. Joseph, was traveling west on LA Hwy 128 when the vehicle he was driving traveled off the right side of the road and struck a ditch embankment. After striking the embankment, the vehicle became airborne and two of the four occupants were ejected from the vehicle.
Charles Barnes, who was not restrained, was transported to a local hospital and where he succumbed to his injuries. An unrestrained passenger in the vehicle, 65-year-old Sylvester Barnes, was pronounced dead at the scene by the Tensas Parish Coroner’s Office. The other two occupants in the vehicle were also unrestrained and transported to a local hospital with moderate injuries.
Alcohol is a suspected factor in the crash. Toxicology samples were obtained and will be submitted for analysis. This crash remains under investigation.
Troopers wish to remind motorists of the importance of seat belt use. Louisiana law requires that every person in a motor vehicle, regardless of seating position, always remain buckled up. Statistics show that the chances of surviving a violent crash rise significantly when properly restrained. Taking the time to buckle up before every trip is the single most effective thing you can do to protect yourself in a crash.
Alcohol consumption affects judgment as well as the skills needed to drive safely. Motorists are encouraged to plan ahead and designate a sober driver before going to any place where alcohol will be consumed. Not doing so can have deadly consequences.
In 2018, Troop F has investigated 6 fatal crashes resulting in 8 deaths.
