Goodpine man arrested in shooting death of woman

Charged with second degree murder

LASALLE Parish - A Goodpine man has been arrested after a woman was found dead in a bedroom.

Melvin Gardner, 66, was arrested Friday, March 17, 2017.

The incident happened around 4:30 p.m.

LaSalle Parish deputies responded to a possible shooting in the Goodpine community of LaSalle Parish.

Deputies worked to persuade Gardner to exit the home, to which he eventually agreed.

Gardner was immediately taken into custody while deputies searched the home for the victim.

Jamie Renee Bates, 31 of Pollock (formerly from Jena), was found dead in a bedroom of the house from an apparent gunshot wound.

Gardner was charged with second degree murder and remains in custody in the LaSalle Parish Jail.

His bond has been set at $500,000.

Detectives report that no motive has been established in the shooting at this time.

The case remains under investigation.
