FIREWORKS SAFETY: How to stay safe this Fourth of July

Ouachita Parish, La.-- - When most people think of the Fourth of July holiday one thing comes to mind-- fireworks.

While they may be fun to set off and watch, it's important to use extreme caution in the process.

"It's very important to be safe because people can get burned or fires can break out," Dusty Harris with the Ouachita Parish Fire Department said. "The most important part is we're trying to be proactive right now."

Harris said you should first be up to date with your local laws regarding the use of fireworks.

"If you fire fireworks within the city limits of Monroe or West Monroe that is strictly prohibited," Harris said.

He said if you're going to light fireworks with your kids around, make sure to provide proper adult supervision.

"So make sure you're out there with your children doing fireworks," the assistant manager of Boomer's Fireworks Neomia Taylor said. "It's fun, so enjoy it with them."

Also, keep your distance once they are lit.

"You light it, step back and yeah if it's big- run," Taylor said.

Harris said to keep a water jug or water hose nearby.

"Have water handy, so you can cool a burn or put out fires. If you see that the fire is getting out of control too quick never hesitate to call 911," Harris said.

Lastly, once you're done, make sure to throw away the fireworks properly.

Officials suggest soaking them in water and then placing them in a metal trash can, away from buildings or combustible materials.
