El Dorado Fire Department gives tips to help maintain fire-safe home this winter

EL DORADO, Ark. - 2017 December 07

Firefighters say when it gets colder, the thermostats go up.

And sometimes, a simple heating of the home can either end with a fire or end in a call to the fire department.

"Particularly when people first start turning on their heating systems, we do get a number of calls because the heating systems will put out some odors, you know, burning the old lent out and things like that," said Chief Chad Mosby, El  Dorado Fire Department.

But many times getting your heating system inspected can prevent a call to the fire department.

"To make sure they are free of lint or anything like that that could cause a fire," said Mosby.

And don't forget about double checking your home.

Chimneys need to be checked for damage and also cleaned.

"Occasionally over time, those fluids develop cracks and things like that. They could let heat and flames get into your attic space."

Firefighters say space heaters are the cause of big fires a lot of the time.

They say a lot of the time objects are too close to it, but also that they need to be cleaned because they could give off carbon monoxide, and you should remember one thing about all natural gas appliances.

"If the flame is burning blue, you're good. If it's any other color than blue, yellow, orange, then you've got some issues," he said.

And lastly, of course, Christmas decorations pose some danger in homes, but he says to remember to keep live Christmas trees watered, and avoid overloaded circuits. He says only use one plug per decoration.
