UPDATE: East Baton Rouge sheriff's deputy killed in the line of duty identified

BATON ROUGE, La (LOCAL 33) - The parish of East Baton Rouge and the East Baton Rouge Sheriff's Office is mourning the loss of a deputy  killed in the line of duty Saturday night.

Authorities said  two East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s deputies entered the Classic Cuts business at 16040 Hatteras Ave.  around 11:00 p.m.in reference to a rape investigation. While inside the business, deputies struggled with the suspect and shots were fired.

One East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s deputy was transported to a local hospital for treatment, but succumbed to his injuries. The suspect was also injured and transported to a local hospital for treatment. Louisiana State Police will be conducting the investigation into the shooting incident. 

43-year-old Sgt. Shawn Thomas Anderson of the East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office died as a result of his injuries following the shooting.

“Our hearts are broken as we grieve for one of our brothers,” Sheriff Sid Gautreaux said. “We ask for your continued prayers and support during this difficult time as we mourn the loss and honor the memory of Sgt. Shawn Anderson.” 

Sgt. Anderson began working at the East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office in May of 1999. He served in various divisions including Parish Prison, Narcotics, K-9, Emergency Services Unit, Maritime Response Team and SWAT. Sgt. Anderson also served in Uniform Patrol at Burbank, Scotlandville and most recently Kleinpeter substation.  Sgt. Anderson was presented the Life Saving Award in 2010 for saving the life of a woman on Old Mississippi River bridge. He was also recognized in 2014 for serving more than sixty high risk warrants in 2013 as a part of SWAT with no injuries or shots fired. In March 2016 he was recognized for delivering a baby on the side of the road.

(CNN)Gunfire erupted while two sheriff's deputies were conducting an investigation near a barber shop in Baton Rouge, leaving one dead, Louisiana authorities said.

The deputy from the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office died Saturday night, Louisiana State Police said. The two deputies were investigating a domestic situation at a storefront, CNN affiliate WBRZ reported. No more details were immediately available on the incident.
The second deputy was not injured. The shooter was injured and transported to a local hospital, authorities told the affiliate. Their identities were not immediately available.
"We are focused on working with the family, praying for the family and making sure our deputies have the help and support they need," sheriff's spokeswoman Casey Rayborn Hicks told the affiliate.
This is the second killing to hit the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office in nine months.
In July, a Missouri man ambushed and killed three law enforcement officers in Baton Rouge -- including one from East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office.
