CenturyLink to lay off 165 employees, including 35 in Monroe

MONROE, La. - According to our partners at The News-Star, CenturyLink has eliminated 165 jobs companywide, including 35 at its corporate headquarters in Monroe.

The layoffs are a result of "redundancies" created through the company's acquisition of Level 3 Communications.

CenturyLink employs more than 50,000 workers globally.

"As a result of our acquisition of Level 3, our customers, from individual consumers to global enterprises, benefit from our expanded, innovative network solutions and our complementary managed services," CenturyLink spokesman Annmarie Sartor said in a statement to USA Today Network.

"The combination of the two companies also has meant that we must eliminate redundant positions," she continued. "As a result, we are eliminating IT positions in Product Development and Technology."

CenturyLink closed its massive $34 billion deal to buy Level 3 Communications on Nov. 1, positioning the company to go head to head with giants AT&T and Verizon in the business communications realm, the company announced Wednesday.

CenturyLink is the largest public company headquartered in Louisiana.

CenturyLink has more than 2,700 employees in Louisiana with an annual state payroll exceeding $200 million.

Most of those employees are located at the company's Monroe headquarters.
