NEW IBERIA, La. (LSP) - UPDATE (11:42 A.M. 10/16/17): State Police has released the following update to an early morning Breaking News Story from Iberia Parish.

Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop I began investigating a fatal crash involving a pedestrian on LA 14 eastbound at Leleux Road in Iberia Parish.

The crash claimed the life of 4 year old Raylen Jones of New Iberia.

An initial investigation by State Police has revealed that Jones and his juvenile sibling were able to exit their residence without detection.

At some point, police say, Jones walked out onto LA 14 and was struck by a car being operated by 52 year old Alan Bacas of Delcambre.

Police say Jones sustained critical injuries and was air-lifted to Lafayette General Medical Center where he succumbed to his injuries.

Bacas was wearing a seat belt and was not injured, according to police.

Impairment is not a factor in the crash. Troopers, along with the Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office Juvenile Division are continuing the investigation.

ORIGINAL: NEW IBERIA, La. (KLFY) A 3 year old New Iberia toddler is dead after police say he walked out of his house Saturday night in New Iberia and was struck by a car.

It happened around 10:00 p.m. on Hwy. 14 at Leleux Road, according to Major Wendell Raborn.

Raborn says the driver that struck the child didn’t see him until the last second and couldn’t avoid the impact.

Raborn said the child’s mother had put the child to bed for the night and was asleep herself when the 3 year old and another young child got out of their mobile home and walked into the roadway.

The second child witnessed the crash and ran back into the home to alert the mother, Raborn said.

No charges were filed against the driver, Raborn said, but the incident is still being investigated by State Police.

“This is a tragic situation.” Raborn said. “The Sheriff’s Office thoughts and prayers are with both families at this time.”
