MONROE, La.-- - When a disaster takes over, American Red Cross drops everything and hits the road, but before that happens, they must go through extensive training.
They held a free Disaster Action Team Boot Camp at the Red Cross Office Saturday.
Community members and volunteers gathered in hopes of becoming an on-the-scene responder.
Trainees learned about assessing damages of affected homes, determining livability and learning how to provide assistance.
Disaster Program Specialists, Lana Haire, says helping others in their time of need is a gift within itself.
"It's such a good feeling to know that you're able to help someone when there's no place else to turn when it may be the major crisis in their life, that you can be there for them," Haire said.
Haire says the training is held one day, and to get involved click here or visit the Red Cross office at 414 Breard St. in Monroe.
