MONROE, La. - UPDATE: [01/18/2018 9:00 p.m.]
Arrest reports are giving us more information about the brain injury that's put a 21-month old baby in the hospital, and her grandmother and grandmother's boyfriend in jail.
They said Monroe Police became involved a week ago yesterday, when the little girl showed up at the St. Francis Medical Center.
Police said her head and brain injuries came from blunt force trauma.
Doctors told investigators that the injury was a 'deliberate act' and not an accident.
The toddler was being watched by her grandmother, Sherry Waffer, and Waffer's boyfriend, Leslie Hardwell, at their Monroe home.
They told police that they both noticed the injury nearly three days before taking her to the hospital.
Both are charged with attempted second degree murder.
UPDATE: [1/17/2018 9:30 p.m.]
Wednesday a 21-month old toddler is recovering at the St. Francis Medical Center after going through an emergency surgery for serious head injuries.
"Our main concern is the baby's full recovery and second the freedom of Sherry Waffer," family member Katrina Waffer said.
Yet, the child's grandmother, Sherry Waffer, and her boyfriend, Leslie Hardwell, are behind bars facing attempted second degree murder charges.
Police said the two failed to get the little girl medical attention, although they were 'fully aware of the child's injury'.
This all stems from an incident that happened Jan. 10, when police suspect the child was hurt at the couple's Monroe home.
However, family members of Waffer said the situation isn't what it appears.
"We know and anyone who knows Sherry knows she would never harm anyone especially her grandchild," Waffer added.
Family members said Hardwell was babysitting the toddler for the family, when the child was hurt.
"We want justice for the baby and we want whoever who done this to the baby to just come forward and let us know what happened," Waffer said.
The extent of the child's injury, as well as how she got hurt, is still not clear.
Two people have been arrested for attempted second degree murder after an 21-month-old had emergency surgery due to a brain injury.
Leslie Hardwell, 52 and Sherry Waffer, 44, have all been arrested in regards to the injured infant.
According to Monroe Police, an 21-month-old child was taken to St. Francis Hospital on January 10, 2018 with a brain injury.
The infant had emergency surgery and is now in stable, but critical, condition.
Monroe Police say the pair arrested knew of the child's injuries and did nothing to seek help.
We are told Waffer is the grandmother of the infant, but we are unsure of Hardwell relation to the infant.
They are all charged with attempted second murder.
Details are limited at this time.
This is a developing story. We will continue to update this article as more information becomes available.
