17-year-old arrested after shooting juvenile bystander at recreational center

MONROE, La. - A Monroe man has been arrested after shooting a juvenile at a local recreation center.

Michael Goins, 17 of Monroe, was arrested Saturday, September 23, 2017.

According to the arrest report, officers responded to a shooting at Harvey Benoit Recreation Center located at 1700 Oaklawn Dr.

Once officers arrived, they located a juvenile male that had been shot in the leg. The investigation revealed that the suspect’s name was Michael Goins (Lil Mike).

It was discovered that Goins and a juvenile had been in a long time feud and they met up at the recreational center.

An argument ensued and Goins pulled out a .45 caliber handgun and fired four shots at the other party while he was in a group of five other juveniles on the basketball court.

Goins struck one of the juvenile bystanders that did not have anything to do with the incident. Goins was identified by numerous witnesses as the shooter.

Officers located Goins in the 2000 block of Peach St. and took him into custody.

Goins refused to make a statement on the incident.

He has been booked into the Ouachita Correctional Center on one count attempted second degree murder, five counts aggravated assault with a firearm, one count illegal use of weapons or dangerous instruments, one count carrying a firearm or dangerous weapon in a gun free zone, and one count aggravated second degree battery.

His bond has been set at $320,000.00
