Kids Grow Trees for Earth Day

WEST MONROE, La. -- In celebration of Earth Day, 5th graders from George Welch Elementary school were given their own trees to plant.

This happened after they watched a presentation about renewable products. Representatives from Graphic Packaging led students in a "Trees Into Cartons, Cartons Into Trees" program which highlights the sustainability of the paperboard packaging that the company produces at each of its three West Monroe production facilities.

"This is a way to help the kids learn good principles early on," said Tony Diaz with Graphic Packaging. "These are jobs in their community that they need to understand are good jobs that are good for the environment."

Students' trees were placed in recycled and reused cartons that will decompose underground once the tree is planted, helping the environment.

The company produces paperboard products that are turned into food boxes and packaging. The Trees Into Cartons, Cartons Into Trees outreach program will also be presented at other local schools later this week:

Wednesday April 23 @ Riverbend Elementary 1:45pm
Thursday April 24 @ Drew Elementary 9:00am
Friday April 25 @ Woodlawn Elementary 1:00pm
