Dirty South Marathon Coming in October

West Monroe -- Registration is currently underway for the Dirty South Marathon, a two-day running event happening October 11 - 12, 2014 in West Monroe, Louisiana. The inaugural Dirty South Marathon which is a 26.2 mile flat and small rolling hills course is expecting to attract 2,000 participants and 6,000 attendees. Runners preferring a shorter distance can participate in a half-marathon on the same day or a 5K run the day before. Individuals can find registration links online through dirtysouthmarathon.com.

Local residents and visitors will witness thousands of runners charging by the Ouachita River, through historic downtown streets, over a few small rolling hills, and around the scenic bodies of water in Northeast Louisiana. During the running event, runners can expect to see the communities supporting efforts by operating nutrition and aid stations at every mile along the course. After the event, activities will be available at the post-race Finish Festival.

The Expo and Finish Festival will entertain participants and spectators while showcasing the best of Northeast Louisianan culture.

Free and open to the public, The Dirty South Marathon Expo will be held on Saturday, October11 at the West Monroe Ike Hamilton Expo Center. The Dirty South Marathon Expo will feature up to 115 vendors with the latest fitness trends, health services, athletic apparel for various sports, and nutrition providers.

Participants in Saturday’s 5K will enjoy a fun run from the Ike Hamilton Expo Center, over the Endom Bridge into Downtown Monroe, and back to the Ike.

Sunday’s Finish Festival will provide runners and spectators fun activities as they sample Northeast Louisiana culture.

Like major marathons in Louisiana and across the country, the Dirty South Marathon has a charitable component. Participants can signup to run as a St. Jude’s Hero by pledging to raise money for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. St. Jude’s Hero’s will strive to hit fundraising milestones for free entries, pre-race meals, and accommodations.

The 2014 fundraising goal is $10,000 from St. Jude’s Hero’s, pledge programs, and $2 per race participant from Dirty South Running Company, LLC.

Participation in the Dirty South Full Marathon and Half Marathon will be capped at 2,000 and 4,000, respectively, for 2014. Registrations for the race events are on a first-come, first-served basis. The 5k is not capped at this time. Participants should register now to ensure a spot in the race and to avoid slightly increasing fees, as the event grows closer.
