City council members and owners of a brand new business that opened up Saturday are hopeful to bring more business to the struggling area.
"Fab 5 Salon" officially had their ribbon cutting in the 400 block of Ouachita Avenue Saturday.
Monroe City Council Member for District 4, Kenneth Wilson, was on-hand to celebrate the opening along with the salon's owners and designers.
The salon sports two different grooming sections specifically curtailed to men and women.
The section for women houses brightly-colored chairs, benches and mirrors and all the sinks and dryers needed for a woman’s hair.
The section for men contains a pool table and a television and video game system in the room adjoining the barber’s workstation.
Those who designed the salon said they wanted to make something to bring positivity back to the south side.
"Kind of like a spa feeling where you can come with your children. A man can come with his son, get his hair cut. The women can bring their daughters to sit with them and get their hair done, just a positive environment where you feel safe," said salon designer Toria Adams.
"I talked about renewing the pride right here on the south side, so certainly I think for renewing the pride, this is a fine example, 'Fab 5' being here not only in the City of Monroe but District 4," City Councilman Wilson said.
Wilson hopes the opening of this new salon will start a trend of more businesses and houses being built on the south side, an area the City of Monroe’s leadership vowed to devote more attention to at the start of 2014.
