NEW ORLEANS, LA (WDSU) -- Since arriving in New Orleans in 2006 Drew Brees has never missed a game due to injury. That may change as the star quarterback recovers from a strained oblique muscle.
While nothing has been determined, it wouldn't be surprising to see Brees sit out of the Saints first preseason game Friday in St. Louis against the Rams.
Historically, Saints starters only play a series or two in the first preseason game.
Following the annual Black and Gold scrimmage Saturday at the Greenbrier Resort, head coach Sean Payton said, "We held Drew. He strained an oblique Friday. We just want to be smart about (the injury)."
"We've been hugging him and I rubbed his obliques. I hope that helps," said veteran lineman Zach Strief jokingly.
Veteran cornerback Champ Bailey has been absent from Saints practices since Thursday. Payton has yet to give specifics on Bailey's injury.
