Press Release -- Today Lt. Governor Jay Dardenne and Gary Joiner, education chair for the Battle of New Orleans Bicentennial Commission, accepted a $37,500 check from Sonia Perez, AT&T Louisiana president, toward the creation and promotion of the Battle of New Orleans K – 12 curriculum.
Last week, Lt. Governor Dardenne presented the curriculum during a BESE meeting which was quickly endorsed by the Board and praised for its strategies.

The curriculum will be available to teachers throughout the state this fall. The Department of Culture, Recreation and Tourism education team will present to social studies teachers at the the Louisiana Council for the Social Studies annual conference in October.
“AT&T’s generous donation is making a very important education piece available to Louisiana schools which had very little information on the importance of the Battle of New Orleans,” Henson Moore, BONO Bicentennial Commission chairman, said.
The Battle of New Orleans curriculum is the third K – 12 curriculum to be released since Lt. Governor Dardenne took office. Previous curricula covered the state’s Bicentennial and the Atchafalaya National Heritage area. Each BESE endorsed curriculum provides hands-on materials to educators and students as well as educator training to implement the program.
