UNION PARISH -- A Union Parish man is in jail, accused of shooting his own dog.
According to the Union Parish Sheriff's Office, 34 year old Jimmy Schoolfield, from West Sterlington, was arrested Sunday afternoon, after deputies say he shot at his dog six times.
Witnesses told deputies that Schoolfield went to get Pluto, his red and brown Dogue De Bordeaux, or French Mastiff, who had followed two young girls to their home down the street after playing with him.
The witnesses told deputies that Schoolfield had come to retrieve the dog after it had followed 10- and 11-year-old girls home after they were picked up by their mother’s boyfriend at the suspect’s house.
The witnesses said when Schoolfield put the dog in the back of his truck, Pluto jumped from the truck.
Deputies say that's when the Schoolfield pulled out a .22 caliber pistol and for reasons unknown, started shooting.
The dog was hit one time in the leg but survived.
Local veterinarian, Damon Odom, treated Pluto and says he is stable and has swelling in his leg from the pellet fragments. Odom says he will be caring for the dog at his vet office starting Tuesday morning.
The Union Parish Humane Society says they're getting involved to ensure Pluto has a happy ending.
"There's no call for that, anybody would have helped him with the dog, he just blew," said Mary Allen, a member of the UP Humane Society. "We'll vet him, and I'm sure he'll be fostered and make sure he doesn't have any issues with people, kids. Apparently he was kept up all his life."
We stopped by the residence and saw Pluto inside a kennel run with a small dog house and water.
We spoke with a woman named Anita who tells us she is caring for the dog until he can be taken to stay at the vet's office Tuesday morning.
She tells us Schoolfield has always had a hot temper with the dog.
Schoolfield was booked into Union Parish Detention Center for aggravated cruelty to animals, which is a felony.
No bond had been set as of this afternoon.
The Humane Society of Union Parish says they will be checking with law enforcement on legalities before fully pursuing foster and adoption opportunities for the dog. Members tell us that they have people lined up who are willing to foster and/or adopt Pluto.
