FARMERVILLE (UPSO) -- A Farmerville man has been accused by an elderly couple of taking money from them to feed his narcotics problem.
Richard Steven Smith Jr., 28, was booked into the Union Parish Detention Center late Tuesday on two felony counts of theft of assets of an aged person. His bond was set at $3,000.
The 76-year-old female complainant told sheriff’s investigators that Smith took blank checks from her checkbook. She said 12 checks were written amounting to nearly $800.
The victim also noted that a credit card had been taken from her purse and $400 worth of unauthorized purchases were made on it.
Investigators said the victims also reported that Smith had written a letter asking her and her husband not “to send me to jail.”
One of the victims told investigators that Smith, who had resided with the couple, had been acting irrationally and feared he might become violent with them.
