FARMERVILLE, LA (UPSO) -- A Farmerville couple charged in a domestic abuse case early Monday morning will have a bond hearing Wednesday.
A new state law now requires that persons arrested on felony counts of domestic abuse battery must have a bond hearing within five days, Sheriff Dusty Gates said.
Jessica Colbert Gates, 28, and Joshua Adam Gates, 27, both of 184 Lyggon Lane, were booked into the Union Parish Detention Center. Jessica Gates was booked for second-degree domestic battery with child endangerment and Joshua Gates for domestic abuse battery-strangulation with child endangerment.
Deputies said their investigation showed that Joshua Gates arrived home late Sunday night and that his wife at first refused to let him in until he could explain why he had spent $1,200 at a strip club some four months earlier.
Jessica Gates reported her husband started laughing and stated “it is what it is.” The fight escalated from an upstairs bedroom, down the stairs into the living room and back up the stairs. She said her husband grabbed her by the arms and threw her on the bed and against the wall. She was eventually thrown down the stairs, she told deputies.
The wife also said Joshua Gates took her telephone and went back up the stairs and she followed. She said she then pushed him down the stairs. The husband finally put his wife into a headlock. Jessica Gates said she blacked out.
Joshua Gates told deputies he had to grab his wife to keep her off him and that she punched him in right eye at least four times. When she left the bedroom, Joshua locked the door, but Jessica Gates took the door down with a screwdriver.
Two children, one 5 years old and the other 5 months, were sleeping during the altercation, deputies reported.
Joshua Gates was treated at Union General Hospital and was later taken to a Shreveport hospital for more medical care.
