torch run bastrop morehouse parish special olympic
BASTROP (KTVE/KARD) -- Law enforcement throughout the state are lacing up their running shoes in an effort help some very special athletes.
They're competing in the state's annual Special Olympics Torch Run.
Officers kicked off the week long event in Bastrop on Wednesday.
Officers in each area of the state pledged to run a certain number of miles.
The money raised from the event allows athletes to compete in the Special Olympic's summer games.
"Today we kicked off in Bastrop and we ran our leg, and we also had cyclists who started here and rode their bikes all the way to Columbia," said Tara Wilson, a deputy with the Ouachita Parish Sheriff's Office.
In addition to OPSO, Bastrop Police, Morehouse Parish Sheriff's Office, West Monroe PD, Monroe PD and other agencies took part in the Torch Run in Bastrop.
Participants will meet in Hammond for the opening ceremony.
