On Friday, Claiborne Electric's Operation Round Up donated thousands of dollars in grant money to Union Parish's Public Library, Homeland Security, and 9-1-1 service.
The program allows customers to round up their monthly power bill to the next even dollar. The pennies collected over the years have added up to a large fund.
"[We have donated] $860,000 thousand dollars in 7 years," stated Mark Brown, the CEO of Claiborne Electric. "So, we've done a lot of good for the communities we serve and the individuals and organizations in those communities."
An independent board of directors reviews applications for grants made from the fund.
Operation Roundup has the highest participation level in the country compared to other similar programs.
"Since its inception, we've had 96 percent of our members voluntarily participate in this program," Brown commented. "That's just astounding."
