Lt. Governor Jay Dardenne makes a stop in West Monroe on his statewide media tour to promote Louisiana's tourism industry during National Tourism Awareness Week. Other speakers include MWMCVB Executive Director Alana Cooper, Mayor Jamie Mayo, Mayor Dave Norris, and Jeff Landry, owner of Landry Vineyards.
According to the Louisiana Office of Tourism, "Tourism is year-round industry in Louisiana, employing one in every 10 Louisianians and generating $780 million annually in tax revenue. It is a statewide effort--affecting the biggest cities and the smallest communities--that increases our quality of life and helps fund civic and social projects throughout the state."
A light breakfast will be served. This event is free and the public is both invited and encouraged to attend.
LT. GOV. DARDENNE ANNOUNCES RECORD-SETTING 2012 FOR TOURISM
Lt. Governor Jay Dardenne is announcing that 2012 shattered previous tourism records, including pre-Katrina years. According to industry statistics, Louisiana attracted 26.3 million visitors in 2012, resulting in $10.7 billion in total visitor spending. The $665 million in state tax revenue generated through domestic and international visitors represents a more than 26-to-1 return on investment of state funding.
"Tourism had a great year thanks to creative marketing, dedicated industry leaders throughout the state and an incredible product--the many passions Louisiana offers," Lt. Governor Jay Dardenne said. "One in 10 Louisianians is employed thanks to the travel and tourism industry, making it the sixth largest employment sector in the state."
People are making more travel decisions online than ever before. In 2012, LouisianaTravel.com had more than 1.4 million visits, representing a 62 percent annual increase. And social media is a top priority of Lt. Governor Dardenne's administration. As of 2013, Louisiana's social media efforts rank eighth nationally among state tourism agencies according to a study released by Think! SocialMedia.
Additional 2012 tourism statistics:
Louisiana's average daily rate increased to $102.36 from $95.77 in 2011, a 6.9 percent increase. ADR represents the average rate paid for rooms sold.
Hoteliers sold 20 million stays in 2012.
More than 11.1 million passengers arrived or departed from Louisiana airports.
Louisiana Welcome Centers greeted 1.2 million visitors.
More than 1.9 million visitors enjoyed Louisiana State Parks.
