Monroe City School District Students to Eat for Free

Monroe -- Monroe City School District students will be able to eat for free in the upcoming school year.

The school district is taking advantage of a new federal initiative that allows public schools in high-poverty areas to provide free meals to all students without families having to fill out individual forms.

A school or a school system qualifies for community eligibility if at least 40 percent of its students participate in the food stamp program.

65 percent of the district's students fall into that category.

The free meals include breakfast and lunch.

The Community Eligibility Program is administered through the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
