Health: The Skinny on Fats

KTVE 10 NEWS STUDIOS -- In November of 2013, the U.S. government announced it would continue the process of reducing hydrogenated oils, the primary dietary source of artificial trans fat in processed foods.

This move could help prevent an additional 20,000 heart attacks and 7,000 deaths from heart disease each year, according to FDA Commissioner Margaret A. Hamburg, M.D.

Cut Out “Bad Fat” – the FDA determined partially hydrogenated oils were no longer recognized as “generally safe for use in food”.

Benefits of Good Fats – According to the American Heart Association, when eaten in moderation and used to replace saturated or trans fats, monounsaturated fats can have a beneficial effect on health by helping to reduce bad cholesterol levels in your blood.

Fats and Weight Loss – Good fats may be included in a weight loss regimen and can fit into a full range of healthy eating plans.
