CDC: Diabetes on the Rise

NBC NEWS -- The latest numbers from the CDC show 29 million Americans have diabetes.

That's up from 26 million in 2010 and translates to nine percent of the total population.

Of that number -- one in four don't know they have the disease.

Another 86 million Americans are pre-diabetic -- meaning they have an increased risk for full-blown diabetes in the near future.

Researchers say poor diet and a lack of exercise is likely contributing to the rise in cases.

Experts say diabetes-related complications cost more than $245 billion in medical costs, lost work and wages in 2012.
