Franklin Parish To Provide Free Medical Clinic

WINNSBORO- Next week the Horace G. White Learning Center in Winnsboro will be turned into a free medical clinic.

It’s part of the U.S. Army’s Innovative Readiness Training Program.

The IRT mission is a joint effort between The U.S. Department of Defense, Delta Regional Authority, Governor Bobby Jindal, Franklin Parish Police Jury, City of Winnsboro, Franklin Parish School Board, Franklin Medical Center, Franklin Parish Sheriff's Office, and the Winnsboro City Police.

“There certainly will be people that are undeserved with regards to medical care and in many cases they probably have never seen a medical professional," said Doyle Robinson of the Delta Regional Authority.

He says the initiative is two fold. While the temporary clinic provides medical services for civilians, it also provides medical training for U.S. Army Reservists.

"If we didn't provide the locations for them here in the delta areas where there are people in need, they would probably have to go overseas to get the same type of military training," adds Doyle.

Franklin Parish Secretary Treasurer Sam Boyd says far too often, folks ignore pain or are unaware of a medical condition, all because they can't afford regular check-ups.

"There are many people that didn't know they had to have a diabetes test. It never entered their mind. They can get this evaluation during this program," said Boyd.

She says the turnout should be substantial

"I feel that at least 3,000 will be reached, but the phone calls that we've received in the last few months it could go upwards of 5,000"

This innovative readiness training program is free to the public and you don't have to register. It's on a first come, first serve basis.

The clinic is opened from July 7th-17th, from 7:30am to 5pm.

The Horace G. White Learning Center is located on LA Highway 4, outside of Winnsboro.
