Mr. Lewis contacted victims in St. Martin Parish saying that he was with SMILE Community Action Agency and would pay all of their bills for a few months. He further instructed them that in order for him to do so, they had to go to Wal-Mart and purchase a green dot prepaid Visa card, provide him with the pin number, and then he would pay their bills.
Once the victim called him and provided him with the pin number, he disconnected his phone. He is also attempting the same scam to victims in Iberia Parish.
Investigators would like to warn potential victims to never provide any personal information to someone over the phone, and to never provide someone with either cash or credit cards in connection with scams such as this. The public is urged to always verify the employment of someone alleging to work for a specific agency.
If a person feels that they are the victim of a scam, contact your local law enforcement agency, better business bureau, and the agency that they claim to be representing.
Anyone knowing the whereabouts of Mr. Lewis is asked to contact the St. Martin Parish Sheriff’s Office at (337) 394-3071.
